Legal Response International (LRI) was established in 2009 (under the name Legal Response Initiative) ahead of COP 15 in Copenhagen as a collaboration between WWF-UK and Oxfam GB to bridge the legal support gap between developed and developing nations. COP 15 was a pivotal moment in the global climate negotiations. The failure of the conference to reach an agreement had the positive effect of galvanising international efforts in the years that followed. Since then, LRI has become a trusted presence in international climate negotiations.

The international climate regime is constantly evolving and is now placing increasing emphasis on the necessary implementation at the domestic level. Mirroring this evolution, LRI has also been providing legal support on climate law development processes in various developing countries and reviewing and analysing existing or draft national climate legislation.

Our lean core team of specialist climate lawyers coordinates a global pro bono network of over 165 lawyers, providing essential, high-quality and free legal support.

Over time, LRI has expanded its work to include:

Legal training and workshops

Mentorship for lawyers from developing countries

An online free and publicly accessible database of over 500 LRI legal resources

maintained by our staff

We now provide multilingual support in French, Spanish, and Portuguese, thanks to partnerships with organisations like LACLIMA.
