LRI Impact

LRI has helped hundreds of negotiators and answered hundreds of legal queries since 2009. We track data on the impact of our service and have outlined the key figures below in a series of charts.

We also receive a large amount of feedback from people who have used the service. This ranges from governments that have implemented legislation with the help of input from our network of lawyers to representatives at climate negotiations who managed to get the answers they needed to fully represent their case.

From John Pundari, CMG, MP – Minister for Environment & Conservation & Climate Change, Papua New Guinea

We very much appreciate the Legal Response Initiative (LRI) for assistance given during the drafting of the Climate Change ( Management ) Bill which was passed on the 28th July 2015 as an Act of Parliament and came into effect on the 1st January 2016.

In many ways the impact of our work is best expressed by Ed King in his Climate Change News article Legal Guardian Angels

“Thank you very much for this analysis. Paragraph 6 i and ii were the most relevant for the question I raised, as these were at the core of the divide. But the document’s broader perspective makes it comprehensive and I thank you for presenting this. The adoption of the agenda goes in the same line.” [verbally:] “The clarifications came at the right time to inform our discussion of the agenda and I used it for an intervention I made.” Sandra Freitas, Togo, Bonn May 2016

“Thank you for your help and advice. We really appreciated your assistance and your quick reply to our call for assistance. My country on the behalf of LDCs thank you gratefully and appreciates very much the way you provide advice and information to our group. I confirm that the information that you provided helped us to understand the major part of the draft agreement.” Hamid Zakaria, Chad, Paris, Dec 2015

“The extra support through an LRI lawyer [on the Angolan delegation] was extremely useful. It helped the LDC Group to address all areas in the draft agreement and to prepare their ‘surgical insertions’ to the text in a short timeframe.” Giza Gaspar Martins, Angola, LDC chair, Bonn, Oct 2015

“Although I am following UN climate change negotiations from a distance, I am no longer directly involved in it. I’ll share your inputs with my colleague who are involved in the climate talks. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the LRI team for the support given to me while I was at the helm of the LDC Group. Please convey my greetings and best wishes to Christoph and others at LRI.”
Prakash Mathema, Nepal, former LDC chair, 2015
